Shanon Hawea

Collective(s):

Shanon Hawea, a Māori artist from Kahungunu, has over 20 years of experience in the creative arts, drawing from his whakapapa and cultural heritage to produce work that embodies the richness of Māori culture. With a Bachelor of Arts in Māori Art, Shanon’s work is deeply informed by his knowledge of kōrero tuku iho, whakapapa and his passion for cultural preservation. His expertise spans across various mediums, including paintings, kōwhaiwhai, woodwork, drawings, mixed media works and digital design, allowing him to express Te Ao Māori through visual arts.

Before pursuing his dream of becoming a full-time ringatoi, Shanon spent 11 years as a Kura Kaupapa Māori teacher, where he shared his knowledge and skills with the next generation, instilling in them a love for their culture through the lens of Toi Māori. His commitment to education and cultural revitalisation has always been at the forefront of his journey, whether in the classroom or on the canvas.

Shanon remains dedicated to ensuring that Toi Māori is not only preserved but also understood for its historical and cultural significance. His work serves as a bridge between past and the present, a visual narrative that educates, inspires, and celebrates the resilience of Māori culture. Now, as he steps into his role as a full-time ringatoi, Shanon Hawea is committed to furthering the impact of Toi Māori, using his craft to uphold the values, history, and beauty of his people.
