Mark Kopua was raised in Mangatuna. A master carver, he has led the creation of several wharenui on the East Coast and in the lower North Island.
Mark played a key role in the revival of moko, working alongside a small group of artists to restore its place in Aotearoa. He has held national and international roles, including the provenance of taonga, and served for many years on the board of Toi Māori.
As a highly respected moko artist and mentor, he has trained several practitioners and continues to work in moko and design.
