Moana Jackson was a prominent Māori lawyer, academic, and activist .  Jackson dedicated his life to advancing the rights and well-being of Māori . Born and raised in the small town of Nuhaka, his early experiences within a Māori community deeply influenced his commitment to social justice.

Jackson's academic journey led him to Victoria University of Wellington, where he studied law and graduated in the 1960s. His education extended beyond the confines of traditional legal studies. He immersed himself in understanding the socio-political landscape of Aotearoa, particularly the challenges faced by the indigenous Māori population. This commitment to both legal and indigenous knowledge marked the beginning of his lifelong advocacy for the rights of Māori people.

Moana Jackson played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Māori Law Commission and was a driving force in the development of legal frameworks that incorporate Māori perspectives. His work encompasses issues such as land rights, treaty negotiations, and the broader pursuit of social justice for Māori communities. He was the legal advisor for Toi Iho.

Beyond his legal contributions, Jackson is recognized for his insightful writings and public speaking engagements. He was a key figure in fostering dialogue on constitutional issues, advocating for the recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi as the foundation document of New Zealand's legal and political system.

Moana Jackson's enduring commitment to the advancement of Māori rights solidified his status as a respected elder and scholar within the Māori community and left an indelible mark on the ongoing journey towards justice and equality in New Zealand.
