Moana Jackson was a prominent Māori lawyer, academic, and activist .  Jackson dedicated his life to advancing the rights and well-being of Māori . Born and raised in the small town of Nuhaka, his early experiences within a Māori community deeply influenced his commitment to social justice.

Jackson's academic journey led him to Victoria University of Wellington, where he studied law and graduated in the 1960s. His education extended beyond the confines of traditional legal studies. He immersed himself in understanding the socio-political landscape of Aotearoa, particularly the challenges faced by the indigenous Māori population.
