Apirana Taylor has been Writer in Residence at Massey and Canterbury Universities, and for three months each at Rangi Ruru, St. Andrew’s College, and Hagley Community College in Christchurch. He has been invited to India twice, to Europe several times, as well as Bali and South America to read and present his poetry.

Most of his writing is his own original stories, with inspiration from his Māori culture, but he also tells Māori myths and legends. He uses dance, movement, and string games as a part of his storytelling technique, and often plays his own music to accompany the stories, on guitar, traditional nose flutes, and a variety of percussion instruments.
